Nurturing Moments: A Heartfelt Guide for Moms Before Your Newborn Photography Session
Preparing for Your Newborn Photography Session:
In my heart-to-heart conversations with new moms from all over the Dallas–Fort Worth area, we often find ourselves discussing the special moments leading up to their upcoming newborn photography sessions. One topic that always comes up is food, and the choices we make in those precious days before welcoming a new life into the world.
Today, I'd like to share a comprehensive guide to help you prepare for your newborn's photography session, one filled with love, care, and attention to detail. Did you know that the foods you choose to eat can influence the comfort and happiness of your baby during this unique moment? By paying thoughtful attention to your diet, you can help ensure a calm and contented baby during this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
To provide you with the very best advice, I've divided this guide into three sections, each designed to help you prepare with love and care for your upcoming newborn's photo session.
Choosing Foods for Peaceful Moments:
Certain foods can sometimes lead to discomfort for your newborn. To ensure a harmonious experience, consider avoiding these foods at least 48 hours before your session:
- Citrus and Acidic Foods: This category includes cranberries, pineapple, grapefruit, oranges, lemons, strawberries, all types of berries, tomatoes, chocolate, peanuts, pizza, spaghetti, chili, tacos, spicy foods, Mexican cuisine, salsa, and ketchup. While some moms can enjoy citrus fruits without any issues, it's essential to observe how your baby reacts. If your little one experiences discomfort, diarrhea, or unusual stools after you've consumed citrus fruits, consider eliminating them from your diet. Your daily dose of vitamin C can be obtained from other sources, like leafy greens.
- Gassy Vegetables: Vegetables like asparagus, onions, cucumbers, pickles, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussel sprouts, and cabbage can sometimes lead to fussiness in babies. This isn't an indication of a food allergy; it may result from air swallowing during feeding or crying. Most babies adapt to this sensitivity over time. To ensure a serene session for your newborn, consider avoiding these vegetables for at least two days before the photoshoot.
Embracing Moments of Care:
In the days leading up to your newborn's photography session, consider making mindful choices regarding the following:
- Soda and Sugary Drinks: Recent studies suggest that excessive consumption of sugary beverages can have negative effects on a baby's cognitive development. Additionally, infants exposed to sugary drinks may develop a preference for them, potentially replacing necessary hydration with soda. To ensure a healthy diet, breastfeeding moms should reduce their intake of sugar-sweetened beverages, including juice, and opt for unsweetened fruit juice.
- Alcohol: While there is no scientific evidence to indicate that moderate alcohol consumption is harmful to your baby, it's advisable to restrict alcohol during the first three months of breastfeeding. Alcohol can temporarily reduce milk production and might not offer any dietary benefits to your baby's development. After a few months, consider restricting alcohol consumption to a small 4 oz glass. If you still wish to have a drink, you can use stored milk or wait a few hours for the alcohol to clear your system before breastfeeding.
- Caffeine: During the first three months of breastfeeding, it's best to restrict energy drinks, Coca-Cola, chocolate, tea, and coffee, as they may keep your baby awake at night. While coffee is generally safe for breastfeeding, it's essential to monitor your baby's reaction to milk after you've consumed coffee. Some babies may become fussy or wakeful.
- Water: Breastfeeding may make you thirsty, so it's recommended to drink water while breastfeeding your baby. By restricting other liquids, it becomes easier to keep track of your daily intake of six to eight glasses of fluid, which is essential for breastfeeding mothers who need even more during nursing.
Caloric intake during breastfeeding depends on factors such as your BMI, activity level, your baby's age, weight, appetite, and whether you are breastfeeding exclusively or nursing twins. A rough estimate is around 450-500 extra calories, but individual needs may vary. It's crucial not to deprive yourself of essential nutrients if you plan to shed post-pregnancy weight. Losing more than 2.2 lbs per month may require a more balanced diet.
Dietary restrictions from your pregnancy do not necessarily apply to breastfeeding. Pay attention to your diet during the first six weeks after delivery, as everything you eat becomes part of your breast milk. While some babies may be sensitive to specific foods, most adapt over time. Keep a food diary if you notice symptoms in your baby after feeding. Seek advice from healthcare professionals if symptoms persist, especially if you have a family history of allergies.
For vegetarian moms, maintaining a balanced diet is crucial. Ensure you consume enough calories throughout the day, avoid or restrict specific foods mentioned in the guide, stay hydrated, and meet your nutritional needs for protein, carbohydrates, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals. Supplements may be necessary, particularly for vitamin B12, vitamin D, calcium, and omega-3 fatty acids. Vegan mothers should pay special attention to vitamin B12 sources.
While there's no such thing as a perfect diet, these guidelines and common-sense practices can help you prepare for your newborn photography session with love and care. To ensure the comfort and happiness of your baby during the session, it's best to avoid certain foods for at least 48 hours before the photoshoot. Remember that newborn sessions are typically done within the first 14 days after birth, making it essential to prioritize your baby's well-being.
